Paper, as an important carrier of information transmission and recording, has a far-reaching significance and interesting origin in its size specification.
The ISO 216 standard, which includes the commonly used A4 size, is the international standard for paper size. It is used across the world except in North America and parts of Central and South America, where North American paper sizes such as "Letter" and "Legal" are used.The international standard for envelopes is the C series of ISO 269.
In the paper size system, the most common standard size is the international standard paper size, such as A4, A3, etc. Among them, the A4 size (210mm×297mm) is widely used in daily office and printing.
The origin of paper size standards can be traced back to Germany in the 19th century. At that time, in order to standardize the production and use of paper, improve production efficiency and reduce waste, people formulated a set of paper size standards based on mathematical proportions. The core of this standard is that after folding the long side of the paper in half, the size ratio of the paper obtained is the same as that of the original paper.
Taking the A series paper as an example, the A0 size is defined as an area of 1 square meter and an aspect ratio of 1:√2. Fold the A0 paper in half along the long side to get A1 paper; fold it in half again to get A2 paper, and so on. The cleverness of this design is that no matter how the paper is folded and divided, its proportions remain unchanged, which greatly facilitates paper cutting, printing and binding.
This design based on mathematical proportions not only makes the production and use of paper more reasonable and efficient, but also facilitates conversion and adaptation between different sizes. Today, the A series paper size has become one of the global standards and is widely used in many fields such as office, printing, and design.
Although the standardization of paper size seems ordinary, it contains the crystallization of human wisdom and greatly promotes the dissemination and exchange of information.
