CHM Machinery | Paper Roll Runaway? Unstable Tension? The Unwind Brake Could Be The Cause

Introduction
If your paper sheeter experiences paper roll runaway, unstable unwinding tension, paper wrinkles, or inconsistent sheet length, the cutting section may not be the real problem.
Many operators immediately adjust the knives, tension settings, or PLC parameters. However, the root cause often starts much earlier-at the unwind stand.
The pneumatic brake system mounted on both sides of the hydraulic reel stand is responsible for controlling the paper roll from the very beginning of the production process. When it cannot provide stable braking force, the entire converting line is affected.
The unwind brake controls three critical factors before the paper even reaches the guide rollers or cutting section:
- Unwinding tension
- Roll inertia
- Starting and stopping stability
A properly adjusted brake keeps the paper web moving smoothly, while an unstable brake allows the roll to accelerate or decelerate unexpectedly, leading to defects throughout the production line.

One of the most common problems occurs when the machine stops but the jumbo roll continues rotating because of inertia.
This causes:
- Excess paper feeding
- Paper accumulation
- Material waste
- Restart difficulties
A multi-point pneumatic disc brake rapidly absorbs the roll's rotational energy, stopping the unwind roll safely and preventing runaway.
As the roll diameter decreases during production, its rotational inertia changes continuously.
If the brake pressure does not adjust accordingly:
- Paper tension fluctuates
- Wrinkles appear
- Web drift increases
- Cutting length becomes inconsistent
A pneumatic brake automatically adjusts braking torque according to roll diameter, helping maintain stable tension from the first meter to the last.
Many converters believe cutting accuracy depends only on the rotary knife.
In reality, unstable unwinding tension affects the entire production process.
When the paper enters the sheeter with inconsistent tension, it can cause:
- Sheet length variation
- Uneven sheet width
- Poor stack quality
- Packaging problems
Stable braking creates a stable paper web, which is the foundation of precise cutting.
If your production line shows any of these symptoms, inspect the unwind brake first:
- Paper roll continues rotating after stopping
- Paper wrinkles increase during production
- Unstable web tension
- Frequent web drifting
- Sheet length fluctuates without obvious knife problems

Preventive Maintenance Tips
To keep the brake system operating reliably:
- Check brake pad wear regularly.
- Inspect air pressure and pneumatic connections.
- Replace aging O-rings and seals before leakage develops.
- Verify brake response during every machine shutdown.
- Perform annual maintenance on the hydraulic and braking systems.
Routine inspection is far less expensive than production downtime caused by unstable unwinding.
Conclusion
The unwind brake may not be the most visible component on a paper sheeter, but it is one of the most important.
A properly functioning brake system prevents paper roll runaway, maintains stable unwinding tension, protects the hydraulic reel stand, and provides the consistent paper flow required for high-precision sheeting.
For high-speed paper converting lines, stable production doesn't begin at the cutting knife-it begins at the unwind brake.
