Common Faults, Root Causes & Practical Solutions for Paper Sheeter Machine|paper Roll to Sheet Cutter
The common faults of paper sheeter machine fall into four major categories:
1. Parameter & Operation Related
Root Cause: Operators fail to adjust tension, skew correction and running speed according to paper specifications; no hardware damage occurs.
2. Consumable Wear & Tear
The roll to sheet sheeter is equipped with regular wearing parts including belts, oil seals, cutting blades, photo sensors and brake pads, which require replacement upon reaching service life.
3. Mechanical Abrasion
Root Cause: Long-term full-load operation and insufficient periodic maintenance, resulting in scratches on aluminum rollers, lead screws, bearings and shaft ends.
4. Electrical Control & Design Related
PLC communication interference, program address conflict and abnormal power supply.

Combined with practical production experience, frequent malfunctions of the slitter are listed below:
Fault 1: Cut length deviation of 3~5mm, continuous dimensional drift within the same batch
Symptom: Uneven cut length for one parent paper roll, continuous dimensional offset.
Root Causes: Encoder slips under long-term vibration without locking structure; timing belt stretches and slips; PLC communication of early models suffers interference leading to pulse loss; mismatched tension parameters.
Solutions:
Remote preliminary handling: After-sales engineers remotely calibrate cutting coefficients and fasten encoder terminal blocks.
On-site maintenance: Drill and tap the encoder taper bore for rigid locking; replace worn encoders and aged timing belts as a complete set.
Long-term upgrading solution: Modify control system to hard-wired terminals to isolate electromagnetic interference from inverters.
Fault 2: Skew deviation of 2~5mm, out-of-square cut paper
Symptom: Uneven width on left and right sides of paper, failing packaging & printing standards.
Root Causes: Mismatched running speed of skew correction motors; signal drift caused by long-term potentiometer abrasion; slight bending of lead screw under persistent lateral force; failure to set segmented skew parameters according to paper grades.
Solutions:
Remote commissioning: Remotely reduce the speed of skew correction motors and calibrate segmented skew parameters.
On-site maintenance: Replace aged potentiometers; replace deformed lead screws with brand-new skew-correction lead screws, nuts and bearings.
Machine upgrade: Install automatic skew correction assembly for one-click automatic compensation.
Fault 3: Unexpected random shutdown during normal production, black touch screen
Symptom: Unplanned shutdown without regular pattern, no alarm displayed; machine stops again shortly after restart.
Root Causes: Electromagnetic interference generated by inverters interrupts PLC signals; aging or damaged PLC mainboard, loose cables; unstable voltage supplied to HMI (Human-Machine Interface).
Solutions:
Remote support: After-sales engineers re-download original factory standard PLC programs and shield interference parameters.
Permanent upgrading: On-site modification to hard-wired terminal control; replace with new Siemens PLC or HMI.
Fault 4: Severe wrinkling and single-side curling of thin paper & paper roll tail
Symptom: Curling and bending of small finished paper rolls, high reject rate.
Root Causes: Worn bearings at both ends of bowed spreader roller causing web deviation; tension parameters not adapted to thin paper; unbalanced multi-layer web guiding edges.
Solutions:
Remote optimization: Remotely switch to tension curve dedicated for thin paper and adjust parallel parameters of bowed roller.
On-site maintenance: Replace worn bowed spreader roller and all supporting bearings.
Optional upgrade: Install widened & thickened bowed rubber roller assembly to improve paper flattening effect.
Fault 5: Air leakage on multi-point brake, fluctuating unwinding tension
Symptom: Uneven paper tightness, resulting in cut dimension fluctuation.
Root Causes: Aging O-rings of brake pads; loose air pipe joints under continuous vibration.
Solutions: On-site replacement of complete brake pads and sealing rings by engineers; fasten all pneumatic connectors.
Stable operation of the paper sheeter machine relies on regular maintenance and standardized operation. Implementing standardized daily maintenance and properly setting operating parameters can greatly reduce various faults of the sheeter and stabilize production efficiency.
